To discover what the
name Beddgelert means visit the grave of a local top dog. |
You
can still see the quarry waste and the means with which the slate was
transported from these quarries to the sea. The trains still run but today
their business is in transporting visitors along Llyn Padarn with the
majestic views of Snowdon behind it.
Llanberis still holds a secret in the surrounding mountains. A visit to the Electric mountain exhibit will soon explain how one of Britain’s most important power stations cannot be found. Beddgelert This picturesque village just 3.5 miles from Rhyd Ddu is still one of the most frequently visited places around. Surrounded by the mountains and forests Beddgelert provides the starting point for many a walk. Whether this is into the surrounding mountains or following the river meandering towards the sea via the Aberglaslyn pass. Many famous stories and songs have been written following stays in Beddgelert such as the Rupert the Bear stories. Beddgelert itself provides ample places to replenish you and a must is the ‘hottest’ ice cream in town, Glaslyn Ices & Glandwr Café. The Sygur Copper mine is just a mile or so along the road from Beddgelert. Alternatively, this can be done via a pleasant walk along the river and back. Dinas Dinlle beach If you are after a small packed amusement arcade type of beach then this is not the one for you. Dinas Dinnlle, used by the locals, does have a few very friendly cafes but definitely has a long shoreline running from the faraway mountains right along the coast until Caernarfon port. If you enjoy watching or even fancy an aerial view of Snowdonia then visit Caernarfon airport and museum just further down the seafront. |
